About the founder
"I built Helping Hands because someone once showed me it was possible for me too."
I am Carrington Spencer Williams, the founder of Helping Hands. Before I chose to pursue a career in scrubs, I was a kid from Durham, North Carolina, who didn't personally know a single physician, nurse practitioner, or PA. Healthcare felt like a world for other people.
One visit changed that. One shadowing opportunity in the OR and one provider who took the time to open me up to the idea of a career as a physician answered my questions honestly and treated my curiosity like it mattered. That single afternoon rewrote what I thought my life could look like.
I didn't get my revelation until I was in college. I wish that I had the exposure to the field of healthcare and medicine when I was younger. I believe that would have allowed me to start a more genuine pursuit with a more complete understanding of the field from an early age.
So from my lack of exposure and a desire to make situations better for the next generation coming after me Helping Hands was created. It is truly a Mission-based Organization founded on the principle of exposing underrepresented communities to the possiblity of the pursuit of medicine and healthcare. If I only get one student to realize the possibility of a career in medicine, my mission is complete.
Helping Hands exists to be the spark that catalyzes the goal of medicine for the next generation of students. This isn't a business — it's a return trip.
The Helping Hands organization also wants to do its part in facilitating the spread of medical knowledge and basic lifesaving techniques to the communities in which I grew up. I believe in radical transparency for the community I serve.
With that being said, the classes we provide in CPR and BLS serve a twofold purpose. It allows me to pursue my own unique desire to become a physician as I put myself through school, pay for entrance exams, application cycles, and my own housing. But the most important purpose it serves is in how I keep the main mission within Helping Hands, the youth outreach component, free for the schools and youth organizations that need it most.
